All pet cats in England must be microchipped by 10th June 2024 following new laws. This means that pet cats must be microchipped before they reach the age of 20 weeks, including indoor cats. As part of the new rules, you must keep your contact details up to date on a Defra-approved microchipping database. Failure to do so can incur fines of up to Β£500, so book an appointment and get your cat chipped if you haven’t already!

Why is Cat Microchipping Essential?

Cat Microchipping is an essential part of pet care that goes beyond regular check-ups and vaccinations. It’s the most reliable method to ensure your cat’s safe return if they get lost.

Unlike collars, which can break or be removed, a microchip is a permanent form of identification. Tiny as a grain of rice, this chip is inserted under your cat’s skin and carries a unique number that’s registered to a national database with your contact details.

How does Cat Microchipping Work?

The process of cat microchipping is quick, safe, and no more painful than a standard vaccination. Our skilled veterinarians ensure the procedure is stress-free for your pet. Once implanted, the microchip doesn’t require any maintenance, and the peace of mind it offers is invaluable.

Should your cat wander off, any vet or animal charity can scan the chip, retrieve your contact details from the national database, and reunite you with your cat.

The Right Time for Microchipping Your Cat

While cats can be microchipped at any age we often recommend doing so at the time of their second vaccination which conveniently coincides with their second vaccination.

However, it’s never too late to provide your pet with this layer of safety. Whether you’re bringing a new kitten into your home or you’ve welcomed an adult cat, cat microchipping is a step you shouldn’t skip.
